About Our Church

Originally founded on Sunday, April 14, 1872 as the High Street Church, our present-day Grace Baptist Church was created through the union of Eutaw Place Church and High Street Church to form Shiloh Baptist Church. This congregation began with 32 faithful members who held their weekly services at 538 (now 1536) Aisquith Street under the leadership of Mr. Miles Read.

The membership grew exponentially throughout the years, because of a merger of several community churches that were in fellowship with Shiloh Baptist Church. A future merger with Orient Church prompted Shiloh Baptist to change its name to the Aisquith Street Church, to not be confused with a church of the same name with a predominately African-American congregation.

With the change in leadership and consistent congregation growth came the need to, once again, relocate. In 1921, the church moved to its present location and was accepted, in 1923, by the Maryland Baptist Association as the Alameda (and later Grace) Baptist Church.

In November of 1926, the cornerstone was laid and although the leadership frequently changed throughout the history of the Grace Baptist Church, the mission has remained the same: meeting the needs of the people through prayer and service to all. The late 1960s and early 70's saw racial integration throughout Baltimore City and, in May of 1968, Deacon George Kimbrow was baptized as Grace Baptist Church’s first African – American member and ordained as its first African – American deacon in September 1971.

Since this monumental event, Grace Baptist has continued to grow with a greater focus on discipleship, evangelism, outreach and missions within its local and global communities to the glory of God and for the up-building of His Kingdom.
